“Trees” is a series of found poem framed in handmade paper, which includes fallen sycamore bark from along the river. The poems were inspired by the book "The Hidden Life of Trees" by Peter Wohlleben, which I began reading soon after my father - someone who deeply respected trees -  passed away from pancreatic cancer. Although Wohlleben’s topics dealt with forests, I couldn’t help but notice similarities to my own family. Trees, which include parent trees and their seedlings, communicate through their root systems. Trees also fall ill to invasive pests and other dangers - much like cancer. I began to highlight phrases that resonated and a found poem had begun. But I needed to do more than compose the poem. I want the words to come from the tree, to let the trees speak. My goal was to create the illusion that text was coming from the river sycamores and made my own paper with the bark for that creation.
